Q: What made you interested in directing music videos?
A: In the past, I would hire a director to shoot my videos, but wouldn’t always get what I needed. Eventually, I got tired of hanging over the director’s shoulder. I realized that nobody understands the L.A. Calling brand better than I do. Now I really love directing.
Q: Who are some of your influences?
A: I enjoy the work of filmmakers like:
Michael Winterbottom (“24 Hour Party People”)
Wes Anderson (“The Royal Tenenbaums”)
George Miller (“The Road Warrior”)
Sir Ridley Scott (“Kingdom Of Heaven”)
Q: What was the most challenging video directing job you have had?
Directing my video “Krush” was the biggest challenge. The intro has a scene with some cheeky dialogue. It’s really a music-movie instead of simply a music video. I call the format a “Rock-n-Roll Talkie”.
Q: If you could make any song into a video what would it be.
A: I have a song called “Big Face Money”. It’s a working-class anthem about achieving your dreams. It relates to everyone who’s working towards something special in their life.
Q: What other kinds of jobs have you had and how have they influenced your work?
A: I directed a segment for a rock n’ roll cooking show called “Brutally Delicious”. It’s a cross between the “The Food Network” and “That Metal Show”. Musicians are invited to cook their favorite recipe. It’s a really fun concept because it mixes music with cooking. One minute you’re watching concert footage and the next minute they’re roasting a wild boar.
Q: What are some of the most common mistakes people make when they first make a video?
A: I can only speak from personal experience. I’ve made the mistake of working with friends, instead of working with people that understand my vision. It’s a lot of fun working with friends, but it’s not always productive. I’d rather work with friendly professionals and accomplish the goal. I can always have a cold beer with some friends after the shoot.
Q: What are the key ingredients to making a good video?
You need a good song and imagery that matches the sound.
Q: What do you like about the music industry?
A: L.A. Calling is in the business of giving fans high-energy entertainment. Playing live shows is my favorite because of the adrenaline rush you get from the crowd. I like performing with a drummer that drops bombs on stage. I want to see broken drumsticks on the floor before the show is over. Getting paid to do what you love is awesome, but the connection with fans is the best. I’m very excited about touring the great state of Texas this Summer 2013.
Q: What would you change about it?
A: I don’t know that I would change anything about it. I would rather focus on improving myself. I want to improve as an entrepreneur. I’m talking about signing better deals and closing better contracts. It’s about growing artistically and financially. You know…buy your family something nice. That’s the name of the game.
Q: Do you think looks or talent are more important in the music industry?
Q: The most important thing is that the people like what you do. If a lot of people love it, then the music industry will love it too.
